Novel Analysis on The Christmas Carol
The novel chosen, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was first printed in 1843. The 1963 edition written in prose, published by Macmillan Publishing Company is the version chosen to analyze. The central purpose or theme of this novel is to look at the good you do in life and how it carries over after your death. Referring to the first Christmas and what it symbolizes such as the Christ Child's innocence and goodness from before His birth until present time. This book symbolizes good versus evil, of laughing and crying, and of how people should treat each other. The golden rule applies: treat others, as you would like to be treated. Ebenezer Scrooge was an unhappy child. Many things attributed to this unhappiness from childhood to adulthood including being sent away to boarding school while his sister lived at home, being poor, and greediness of always wanting more. This story of Christmas had Scrooge seeing the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. While Scrooge could visualize and eventually feel what was going on he could not at that time change what had been, or what was to be in the future.
Scrooge's sister was younger than him. She apparently loved Scrooge very much and wished for her father to allow her brother to return home where he should stay until he Jacob Marley, Scrooge's partner, had been dead seven years on Christmas Eve. This Christmas Eve upon his arrival home Scrooge saw Jacob Marley's face in the large knocker on his front door. The house in which Scrooge lived had belonged to Jacob Marley. In his vision, Scrooge saw Jacob in chains where he spoke to Scrooge and told him how people that did not go out spreading cheer while living were required to do so in their afterlife. Jacob had come as a warning to Scrooge to change his ways before it was too late.
