Like many Greek plays, Oedipus the King is created not only to enter a competition and entertain. It is written to serve as a comparison to specific events or persons of a certain time. Sophocles uses his play to reveal some characteristics of 5th century Athenians in the main character, Oedipus, King of Thebes.
