Capital Punishment

Capital punishment is a policy characterized by a single horrifying act: the killing of a human being. Alleviating factors aside, most would agree that the death penalty itself is an act of murder-something NOT to be taken lightly. But capital punishment is being taken lightly. Now the practice is casually being accepted all across the country.

A resurrection of the public debate about capital punishment would hopefully result in the elimination of this hypocritical procedure. Capital punishment is murder. And under both the laws of God and our country, a murder is a crime. If we decide to overlook murder, we must always remember why. The price of forgetting is our humanity. Using our indignation as an excuse to rid the world of the vile creatures who have committed murder, we allow ourselves to behave exactly as they have.


And obviously, the penalty of death is the most final punishment possible. Many death penalty opponents say that capital punishment should never be used in a case where the jury or judge is not 100% sure of guilt. They say that, because it is impossible to ever be 100% sure about anything, the death penalty should not be used when someone might be innocent. People have been wrongly executed for crimes they did not commit. This argument has been reinforced recently, as a significant number of prisoners presumed guilty of first-degree murder have been released from prison because of new evidence in their cases.
