Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Psychological reading

The nature of addiction, is at best, difficult for many to understand. Not until

recently, within the last 20 years, has addiction been recognized as an illness

requiring intense treatment and therapy. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr.

Hyde , written by Robert Louis Stevenson, would be read today as an analysis of

addiction. The behaviors examined in the story convey the psychological and

physical affects associated with addiction such as, reasons for use, the

transformation of Dr. Jekyll as the drug begins to take hold, the loss of control

and other symptoms linked to addiction. As this story unfolds, it details

numerous examples of these addictive behaviors that are well know today but

were not understood during the time the story takes place. In the story, Dr.

Jekyll, a well respected, intelligent scientist, becomes tormented by what he sees
