The Road Less traveled
A detailed Summary of The Road Less traveled
The Road Less Traveled seems to be a simple concept to grasp. In the first thirty pages Peck wrote about pleasure and pain. Also about problem solving and delaying gratification. The main focus however was the delaying of gratification, or how I would paraphrase it, the balance between gratification and suffering. While I was reading this I was thinking to my self what an obvious concept this is. For example, if one were to eat only bland foods for weeks once he or she ate a piece of chocolate it would be much more satisfying and taste much better then if one were to have a piece of chocolate after every meal. I speak from experience, I was on a 6 week long backpacking trip in Alaska. Three weeks went by day in day out of eating only peanut butter on bagels in the morning with a cup o

f powdered milk, salami on bagels for lunch with water, and salami and cheese on bagels for dinner. Then it was re-supply time we hiked out 20 miles to get more food and to drop off some backpackers who could not continue. We were too tired to even pack our own backpacks with provisions, so the re-supply people did it for us. The next day we hiked the 20 miles back to our base camp and unloaded. And to our surprise they had given each of us an orange. That single piece of fruit was the most satisfying meal I have EVER had. No meal since that single simple piece of fruit has been able to satisfy me the way that orange did. That is the way I came upon the simple philosophy in which balance and moderation are the keys to being happy in this life. If every day is a sunny warm day and you
