Pornography in Society
What exactly is pornography? According to the Merriam Webster online dictionary, pornography is defined as the depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement. This definition, in, my opinion, is rather generic. However pornography is not an easy model to define. It is, in fact, impossible to define because everyone holds their own definition. Pornography is an opinion, and not a definable concept. It is the opinion of some, that pornography has no place in our society, and therefore, should be banned by our government. I will attempt to explain to you, and clarify, why pornography not only should not be forbidden, but has a definite place in our society. The United States of America affords all of its citizens certain unalienable rights. These rights are outlined in the first amendment of a document known as the Constitution of the United States. The first amendment gives us the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and the freedom of press. Our country was modeled after this document. When our government starts taking away its citizens rights, it sets a very dangerous precedent. While we are on the subject of offensive images and obscene material, I have a question: Who decides what is obscene or offensive? As stated previously, pornography and obscenity, is a matter of personal opinion. Who is the all encompassing deity who will be appointed to save this country from itself? Who is arrogant enough to tell me what I believe to be obscene. That is a decision I would rather make on my own. Another question I have relating to this issue pertains to the criteria used to determine whether or not something is, or is not offensive. Are the images in Hustler magazine considered offensive? How about Playboy? Or maybe the Victorias Secret catalog? If so, what is the feeling as it relates to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and the Robinsons/May lingerie sale advertisements in the Sunday L.A. Times. Where is the line drawn? I have an idea, how about making our own decisions. Here is another novel concept, if it offends you, don't support it. It really is that simple. If a magazine or video compromises your morals and personal values, don't buy it. Humans are an extremely sexual species, and one of only a handful who engage in sexual intercourse for recreational as well as procreational purposes. It seems naturally fitting, that if someone wants to have sex on film or in print, and someone is willing to buy it: then what difference does it make to anybody else. Reverting back to my first point, I love the fact that I live in a country that allows us to have the freedom to make our own choices. A country that is based on individuality where we are given the right to live and die by our ow
