The Bourne Identity
The Bourne Identity directed by Doug Liman tries to create suspense by assigning the difficult mission of piecing together evidence that may reveal Jason Bourne's true identity and bring back his memory, the entertainment aspect, while simultaneously establishing the artistic quality of the film. Liman achieves this by presenting different elements of film; Color, Mise-en-scene, and Screenplay. He uses these elements in an effective way to provide the film with a great artistic feel as well as having an action, suspense movie. Color is an element that directors use very often because of the fact that it works. It can create a symbolic representation of something or someone. Liman was no exception. In the movie he uses the color red many times to signify some sort of action or adventure. I believe that he used it to signify to Jason was around or was coming, meaning that he had some influence in the upcoming scene. This is very evident from the beginning of the film. The movie starts out in a boat in the Mediterranean where several fishermen are playing cards on a table. The color of the table in which they are playing is red. Later in the scene, after they pick up Jason from the sea, they put his almost life-less body on the red
There were many material things that used the color red that meant something, but Liman also used many places to indicate where the action was going to happen. From the beginning of the film we see the red table in the boat. This signified that this was where everything was going to begin. It was the starting point for the movie. Another location where the color red was used was in the CIA cafeteria in the United States. The flowers in the vases all around the cafeteria were red. In this scene the two men, the director of Treadstone and the senior staff member, were talking about the failed mission. I believe this had a specific meaning that the Treadstone department was going to be shaken down, that something was going to happen and it was to be done by Jason. There is, also, a scene where the police come to the hotel where they are staying. This is where the second hitman is around trying to find Jason. In this scene, there is a guy in a red jacket standing behind the hitman. This could be an indication that Jason is around and that he was there before. The climax scene in which the director of Treadstone is trying to get rid of all the information in the Paris safe house, there is one room in which all the documents are being shredded. That room is lit in a red light. It happens that it was this room in which Jason pops out to attack the director. After this scene the action tends to fade away. The last couple of scenes in the movie we get to see the location where Marie has set up her own shop. There is a pan of the scenery and we see that there is many white house. There is a shot in which we pan and there is one red house surrounded by a lot of white house. This is an indication that Jason is about to come to visit her shop and sure enough this happens. When Jason does come though we get to see the whole shop including her dress which happens to be red and the red bag, this all indicating that Jason will return. When Jason does return, however, he is wearing a white shirt. This signifies that he has left his old life of a hitman and is now ready to settle down. The Bourne Identity directed by Doug Liman can be regarded as a very entertaining movie, but instead should be viewed as great work of art. Liman tries to use a variety of film elements and succeeds in making them work for the film. Some elements that he used were the use of Color, Mise-en-scene, and Screenplay. He uses the color red to signify various elements in the movie, from action, adventure to caring and comfort. Liman also uses handheld cameras to create nervousness in the film and sets up frames within frames very accurately. The screenplay was essentially taken from the book by Robert Ludlum and was correctly translated into the movie. Doug Liman made this film effective by using these elements in an accurate way, this is why it was so entertaining and gre
