In the Book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, the setting takes place during the Great Depression. The Great Depression began in October 29, 1929, when the stock market had crashed and stocks were being sold at an excessively high price. When the stock market crashed, many businesses and companies closed down, leaving many people without a job and without any money. Many families were poor during this time and people were desperate for a decent job. Many families also were struggling with taxes and they couldn’t pay them off because they had no money. As the result, people were not able to own land because they had no money and had no place to live. Many other families had problems putting food on the table. The theme of this book is about racism. One type of racism that is in this book is prejudice. The white people in this book are prejudice to the black people. One example of white people being prejudice to black people was when Cassie and Lillian Jean bumped into each other. Lillian Jean said that Cassie bumped into her and she told her dad.
