Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
A detailed Summary of Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
In the Book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, the setting takes place during the Great Depression. The Great Depression began in October 29, 1929, when the stock market had crashed and stocks were being sold at an excessively high price. When the stock market crashed, many businesses and companies closed down, leaving many people without a job and without any money. Many families were poor during this time and people were desperate for a decent job. Many families also were struggling with taxes and they couldn't pay them off because they had no money. As the result, people were not able to own land because they had no money and had no place to live. Many other families had problems putting food on the table. The theme of this book is about racism.
One type of racism that is in this book is prejudice. The white people in this book are prejudice to the black people. One example of white people being prejudice to black people was when Cassie and Lillian Jean bumped into each other. Lillian Jean said that Cassie bumped into her and she told her dad. Her dad thought that Cassie, who was black, bumped into Lillian Jean, who was white, because she was black and he did n

Another type of racism is discrimination. Discrimination is the act of treating someone or something differently. One example of discrimination in this book is how the black and white people have segregated schools. All of the black kids go to one school and all of the white kids go to one school and that is segregation. Another example of segregation how the white kids get to ride the bus to school and how the black kids have to walk to school. One other example of segregation was when Mr. Barnett at Strawberry took all of the orders of all of the other white people first before he took the orders of the black kids, which were Cassie, T.J., and Stacey. Cassie, T.J., and Stacey were next in line and a white girl came up to Mr. Barnett and she got to order her things first, even though Cassie and all of them were next. Another lady came in and Mr. Barnett took her list and got all of the things. Cassie finally spoke up and said that they were next. Mr. Barnett told her to wait until there were no more white people. Cassie then said that he was being unfair. Mr. Barnett was enraged and kicked Cassie, T.J., and Stacey out of the store and he told them not to come back.
One last example of white people treating black people
