They are the Northwestern states, the Shenandoah-Cumberland region, the northeastern states, and the north-central states. The northwestern area is noted for high yields, although they use extensive artificial irrigation. The purpose of controlled atmosphere storage is to slow down the ripening process of the apples. As apples take in oxygen and five off carbon dioxide, the starches inside of them change to sugars. In CA storage, the amount of oxygen in the rooms is decreased.
