Apples:effects in controlled atmospheres

Apples are a common name for specific related trees of the rose family. It can also mean the actual fruit that is resulted from the trees. The apple tree grows mainly in the temperature areas in the world. It is classified as a deciduous plant. The fruit that is found on the tree is a dense, fleshy form that is consequential from the inside of the flower. The flowers themselves, when in bloom, have a curved shape to them, and are frequently striped with a hue of rose to them. Although some of the blossoms can be white, or even bright red. The leaves that are found on the tree comprise of a wooly underside, with rounded leaves. The wood from apple trees is extraordinarily hard, resilient, and has a fine-grain to it. Skin color on the apples can vary tremendously. It can range from an intense green to a deep, blackish red. Along with color, the shape of the apples is diverse, too. The apples can oblate or oblong, and can range in size from a cherry to a regular sized grapefruit.

People have cultivated apples for many centuries, mainly for their fruit. Early apple growers crafted the first varieties of apples. They selected the finest strains from wild seedlings and combined them by grafting. C

ontrolled crossing of desired parents creates different types of apples. They can also be created by standard varieties changing over time. Modern apple varieties are thought to have resulted from natural cross-pollination of several species. It is thought this, because the modern varieties are heterozygous-which means that they do not reproduce true to type.

Controlled Atmosphere storage rooms are substantial in size, and can hold from 10,000 boxes to 100,000 boxes, depending on the volume of the apples and what the apple shipper's strategies are. The whole process of CA storage is non-chemical. The rooms are usually exploited with nitrogen to reduce the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Temperatures in the CA rooms are kept at a constant 32ºF to 36ºF, depending on the type of apple being stored. Humidity in the rooms is maintained at 95% along with the carbon dioxide levels being controlled. To help keep the rooms at their specified atmospheric conditions, computers are used. Harvesting times of the apples affects them greatly, too. If an apple is picked to early, or too late, then it may not do well in CA rooms. To determine when the apples are mature enough, harvesters use firmness, skin color, seed color, sugar level and flesh chlorophyll tests.

The commercial apple production in the United States is limited to four favored areas. They are the Northwestern states, the Shenandoah-Cumberland region, the northeastern states, and the north-central states. The northwestern area is noted for high yields, although they use extensive artificial irrigation.

The purpose of controlled atmosphere storage is to slow down the ripening process of the apples. As apples take in oxygen and five off carbon dioxide, the starches inside of them change to sugars. In CA storage, the amount of oxygen in the rooms is decreased. This intern slows down the process of ripening.
