The Puritan's came to America to fulfill many of their Socio-cultural and political aspirations. Their main goal was to purify all the religions. Massachusetts, the town were the Puritans settled, was known as the "city upon a hill" for the rest of the world to see as an example. Many of their aspirations were fulfilled in many ways, even though they had to go to extremes to accomplish them.
One of the first steps that the Puritans took to cleansing people so that they would be acceptable to God was to educate. By educating people, they could read and study the bible. Despite the fact that they did not come over to America to start a new form of government, their aspirations for government were to have it enforce God's word. Since most government officials were clergy or of that sort, they did not reject religion being involved in government. During the Salem witch trials, the court did not have any problem accusing people just on he said she said evidence. As long as they were purifying their community it was ok. The government did not take such drastic measures only with the Salem witch trial, but also if you were not of Puritan faith. If you believed in some other form of religion, they would ask you to leave to colony, or be executed. This was a result of them ridding their colony of the "bad ones" which god had not ordained.
