Time is a Fire
In this book report paper, I will analyze about a novel titled Time is A Fire, which is written by Vikram Kapur. I will also divide this paper into two main parts. In the first part, I will summarize and take the points from the story. And, in the second part, I will write some of my opinion and critique from a specific main chapter that I choose instead, which is the fourth that talked about the marriage between Rose and Ajay. Based on my point of view, I can tell that the novel was trying to talk about the life about Amrita Gill, a pretty, nice, and smart girl who came from India. Who is later on met another two journalist, Deepak and Jaswant. The three of them worked together and tried to solve the riddle of Indira Gandhi's assassination and the relevance with the riots that took place in Delhi, India in 1984. I can see mystery, political history, and romance combined perfectly into one, which according to me is the best part of the novel. The story began on October 31st 1984, when the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi took place. An innocent sixteen-year-old girl, Amrita Gill was tragically came home to find her parents murdered too because of the riots. Instead of being alone in the riots that occurred in India, Amrita was for
On one evening in November 1997, Amrita got a strange letter from Vancouver, which is written in Gumurkhi. On the letter, it is said that the writer, Gurbachan Singh needed to talk to Amrita. At first, Amrita was wondering who Gurbachan is, until later on she remembered about an old man that she met on her cousin's weeding. However, Amrita decided to ignore the letter at first. On the next day, she found a note on her door asking her to come to the apartment's office. So, she went to the apartment office and found out that there were two strange men who were looking for her in the morning. They were asking many questions and tried to collect as many information about Amrita. Fortunately, in order to keep their tenant's privacy, the assistant manager told them nothing. My overall opinion for this book is great, especially in this chapter, where the romance between Rose and Ajay was slipped perfectly in the middle of the riddle that readers are trying to solve in their imagination. If I were asked to grade this book, I would give a 95%. It's a nice and interesting novel, which I would also recommend my friend to read it too in their spare time. I learned a lot on how the cross-cultural goes between the marriage of Rose and Ajay. And on how they worked on together to hold on their marriage for the future of their son. This book also gained me knowledge about the arranged marriage system in India. In conclusion, there are so many people who were raised in different culture; however, it doesn't mean that culture can prevent them to interact between each other or even make a further relationship. We can take a look on Rose and Ajay's marriage as one of the great examples. With the help of Jaswant's friend in India, Ramesh, they could get all the information about Ajay and his wife, Rose. They began to search their name on the phone book until the found the name of Rose Ahujas. When they arrived at Ajay's house, Amrita decided to go by her own. Rose began the conversation with Amrita by talking about their past life in India. And then, when Amrita started to talk about her purpose to see Rose, a boy came in. He was Rose and Ajay's son. From Rose explanation, not only the riddle of Mrs. Gandhi assassination was finally solved out, but also the murder of Amrita's father and Gurbachan Singh. Instead of losing face, Ajay killed Amrita's parents in order to make their mouth shut that the fact he was already know the plot before the assassination took place and did nothing to prevent that. Two years later, Ajay couldn't afford any longer the guilty feeling that he had felt for the last two years, and then he decided to tell his wife the truth and then killed himself. And then Rose killed Gurbachan later on because he wanted to confess and tell Amrita the truth that had been covered for years. Back to the past, when Ajay was depressed because of losing his previous wife, Pritam was feeling pain too. In this part, I can see how strong the collectivistic culture is. The "We" mentality was strongly developed. Pritam acted to try to feel how the way his friend felt. However, you won't find this culture in a western country, where the individualistic culture and "I" mentality is developed. People in individualistic culture tend to ignore about other people's business. They only care about themselves. In contrast, the people who live in a "We" mentality culture tend to care more about other people's life surround them. For example, when Ajay depressed and share his sadness to Pritam, Pritam listened all the words and try
