A detailed Summary of Saul and David

Saul and David are forever linked in the study of biblical history. Saul came from the lowest tribe of Israel. Saul, a Benjamite, is recognized as the first King of a united Israel. David, the youngest son of Jesse, was anointed by God to become the future king of Israel. Both, Saul and David, chose different paths on the road to kingship. Once they receive their power, the decisions they make reflect the person they have become. It is quite apparent that God chooses to favor King David over his predecessor King Saul. David is God's favorite mainly in part due to David's piety and his undeniable devotion to the Lord.

Saul receives God's blessing when it becomes apparent that the people of Israel will not rescind their demand for a king to rule over them. Saul, as a king, takes matters into his own hands. He exudes arrogance and selfishness during his reign. God put him in charge of the Israelites so that the nation could become stronger. Unfortunately, Saul turns his back on God. Unlike the future leader David, Saul concerns himself with personal gain. King Saul fails to heed God's orders because his priorities are not in accord with what God demands. Saul and David are two men that possessed an unbelievable amount of power. The thing that distinguishes one from the other is the method each chose to utilize his power. Saul chose the path of trying to immortalize his own self. The monument erected on his behalf is a testament to the popularity he amassed during his reign. Unfortunately, in God's view, Saul's lack of piety caused him to lose the Lord's favor. Fortunately, for David, he never lost track of what was most important to himself. David's love of God knew absolutely no barriers. Although he was not as popular with his countrymen as Saul, David cannot be considered a failure as king. Along with putting a tremendous amount of thought into all his decisions, David's strong faith is to be admired. Although his devotion to a higher being seemed absurd in certain circumstances, one cannot deny David's will and determination for something he loved. Curiously, the ever so pious David could not commit to only one woman. In one sense, his pursuit of women he loves corresponds with the trend of his strong will and determination. Promiscuity is a common occurrence in the Old Testament, but it does violate the Ten Commandments. Regardless of his multiple lovers violating the law, David still loved God first and perhaps because of this David remained God's favorite.
