Frederick Douglass and Langston Hughes

In most people?fs lives, there comes a point in time where their perception changes suddenly; a single moment in their life when they come to a sudden realization. These essays, ?gFrom Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave?h by Frederick Douglass and ?gSalvation?h by Langston Hughes describe about both author?fs childhood, their experiences in different time period, however, in both author?fs personal lives the influences of adults on children physically and emotionally let them to change and realize themselves, and understand what is right and wrong.

In his essay, Douglass describe about his childhood in slavery. Frederick Douglass was born a slave in 1817, in Tuckahoe, Maryland. He did not know the exact date of his birth because there were no any records containing it for slaves and it was the wish of most slave masters to keep their slaves thus ignorant. His mother was named Harriet Bailey. He knew very little about his mother since she was employed as a field hand on a plantation some twelve miles away, and she died when he was eight or nine years old. He was separated from his mother when he was an infant and raised by an old woman. Douglass knew even less about his father, but it was rumor


Langston Hughes describe about religious event in his childhood. When Langston was going on thirteen, there was a big revival at his Auntie Reed?fs church in Lincoln, Illinois and his Aunt had determined that the time had come for young Langston to be saved. The preacher had preached a wonderful sermon and one by one each youngster jumped up and went to Jesus. Finally, Langston was the only one left waiting for the Lord to come. He could not see Jesus. However, to save his aunt from any further embarrassment, Langston stood up and pretended to see Jesus. That night Langston went to bed crying because he had lied.

Both Douglass and Langston show about how the acting of adults influence on children physically and emotionally let them to change and realize themselves. Douglass describes it from the cruel way of slave treatment mostly through visual descriptions of the violence of the overseers towards the slaves. When Douglass was a slave of Captain Anthony, he witnessed that the slave was punished cruelly by slave master. ?gI was quite a child, but I well remember it. I never shall forget it whilst I remember any thing.
