The family in Ryan's essay felt as if they had a constant encouraging role model that they could turn to for all aspects of life at any time including at the dinner table. The family in Steve's essay felt as if they had a militant father who did not want to be disturbed especially at the dinner table with the things that happened in his family's life unless they were things of his own importance. He had a special distaste for his child's petty and meaningless problems. Ryan's father would sacrifice all that he could to feed his children and put them before him by purposely serving them abundant portions of food so there was little for him.
