A detailed Summary of Why Man Can Not Govern Himself


Man can not govern himself nor choose his own leaders because of human nature. People are followers and easily persuaded by liars and manipulators. Human nature also puts the individuals wants, needs, and desires before those of the society or state. Democracy is chosen by the people. John Locke wrote that in a natural state man should govern himself, but that this is not possible. He said that people should have total freedom to pursue happiness. Because of human nature, people are self interested and only care about their personal wants and needs. To Locke a democracy is when man agrees to give up rights of individual freedom to form a just society.

Plato says leaders must be smart and selfless not liars and manipulators. Politicians must also be knowledgeably, and many, especially present day politicians, are not. As Plato had said people aren't educated to choose political leaders. This shows how how people will believe what they want to hear. This also shows how Politicians get what they want by lying and manipulating people. In Plato's democracy politicians do not know their business and people don't think right knowledge is appropri


ate for guidance. Plato's democracy is very similar to that which we have in our society today. Many politicians aren't knowledgeably and say what the people want to hear, this is how they are elected. Once elected it is not guaranteed that the politicians will do the things the promise. Many times they only do things that they will benefit from.

Because man cares about what he will benefit from the most, people vote for the politicians that say what the people want to hear. Man will vote to choose something he will benefit from, not what is for the good of the state or society. Many people who are not educated enough to choose leaders, choose the person everyone else is voting for. Many people also vote for what sounds easy and most appealing. The mob in Caesar was easily persuaded by Marc Antony to kill Brutus. The angry mob in Tom Sawyer was easily stopped, when confronted and told that they could not and would not kill Sherburn. This shows that when large groups of people or mobs are confronted they can be easily persuaded into changing their ideals.
