Why Man Can Not Govern Himself
Man can not govern himself nor choose his own leaders because of human nature. People are followers and easily persuaded by liars and manipulators. Human nature also puts the individuals wants, needs, and desires before those of the society or state. Democracy is chosen by the people. John Locke wrote that in a natural state man should govern himself, but that this is not possible. He said that people should have total freedom to pursue happiness. Because of human nature, people are self interested and only care about their personal wants and needs. To Locke a democracy is when man agrees to give up rights of individual freedom to form a just society. Plato says leaders must be smart and selfless not liars and manipulators. Politicians must also be knowledgeably, and many, especially present day politicians, are not. As Plato had said people aren’t educated to choose political leaders. This shows how how people will believe what they want to hear. This also shows how Politicians get what they want by lying and manipulating people.
