Rich vs. Poor
"Once upon a time . . ." is a phrase used in fairy tales. A fairy tales is a story, for children, involving unbelievable things such as fairies, wizards, goblins, dwarfs, dragons, princesses, knights and other magical creatures. Many of these fairy tales were created years ago to entertain children. There are two brothers who created many of these tales; they are Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The brother's made up stories ranging from fairy tales to religious allegories. One religious allegory that I thought was intriguing was "The Poor Man and the Rich Man." This story was written between the late 1700s and the early 1800s. In the story, the brothers showed how money and appearance change the way people view other people. The rich man, in the story, can be seen as rude, uncaring and self-involved. For example, "Then the rich man heard someone knocking at his door, he opened the window and asked the stranger what he wanted. The Lord answered, I only ask for a night's lodging. Then the rich man looked at the traveler from head to foot, and as the Lord was wearing common clothes, and did not look like one who had much money in his pocket, he shook his head, and said, no, I cannot take you in, my rooms are full of herbs and seeds" (Grimm
The Lord helped the poor man have a better life because the poor man gave of himself. Throughout the story the Lord asked one simple question. He asked both the rich and the poor man if they would give him a room for the night; however, the answers he got were very different. First he asked the rich man and after the rich man turned him away the Lord turned his back on the rich man, yet at the end of the story when the rich man came back to get his three wishes the Lord gave the rich man three wishes. Therefore, the Lord is seen here as being a giving and forgiving person. After he asks the rich man, the Lord then goes to the poor man, who of course treats the Lord like a king. So the Lord blessed the rich man. This story can also represent how the Lord is in real life. For example, the Lord at some point in time will ask everyone if he can come live in their heart; however, if we tell him no then he turns his back on us. Yet if we say yes then he gives us blessings for the rest of our life. I think that this was the point that the Grimm Brothers were trying to get across. Since people were religious during the time of the Brothers, they tried to create a story that would allow people to think about what they would do if the Lord came and knocked on their door one day. When someone comes knocking on our door, we should not just help him or her for the pure motive of getting something out of it. Also, when we do help someone we should give him or her our best instead of other peoples best. For instance, "There were two men in a certain town. One was rich, and one was poor. The rich man owned many sheep and cattle. The poor man owned nothing but a little lamb he had worked hard to buy. He raised that little lamb, and it grew up with his children. It ate from the man's own plate and drank from his cup. He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter. One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing a
