In the days which the world just hit another century, the 21st, it is very dissapointing to know that people cannot freely chose their jobs and do not have same opprtunities with any other people just because of their gender. Gender bias are one of the most common problems in the workplace. It mostly effects women and men separately, it can be said that it mostly effects women, and their professional life together. It puts women under pressure and even make them depressive and agressive. Even though it seems like every story has two sides what is being done to women is completely inexplainable and unfair.

Description and Types of Gender Bias

In respect to gender bias, one may wonder, "What is gender bias, anyway?" To answer the question, it can be said that, gender bias is any kind of activity that disturbs women and make them feel like that are not wanted or they are not welcomed to the bussiness. Bias, in dictionaries, means, tendency to be for or against something. So, gender bias can also be explained as the discrimination for or against a type of gender. It includes job segregation, gender stereotyping, discrimination in hiring, pay and promotions, sexual harrasment, and family issues (DeVoe, 1999)


There is also two different ways a woman can behave in the workplace, generally if she is the manager. As previously stated women are thought to be weaker and more sensible than men. This is the common belief. She can either bahave in a way that fits the stereotype, mentioned above. She can act "supportive", "dependant" and "nurturing" way (Eckberg, 2000). If she acts in this way he employees will probably love her, but it also causes some problems: This kind of behavior do not the fit the way managers are generally thought to behave, it contradicts with the idea of a manager or a upper level employee. If she acts like a real manager, logical and in control, or assertive; her employees or colleagues will probably do not like her even can talk badly about her. Both options are tricky.

The fact that their jobs are less valued than a job done by men, they are thought to devalued the job, and being considered less skilled than men, make women workers feel insecure about themselves. They lose their self-confidence. They start to have less faith in themselves to be successful. They start to question their education and information they have and need for the job. This puts them under pressure since with one mistake or one failure they can "loser"s one in their colleagues' eyes. This make them feel like they have to try harder, and be better than men to be successful, order to be respected and trusted by both their male colleagues and their clients.

Gender stereotyping also effects important choices about who will get the job, women or men. Since women are thought and considered not to meke good leaders or they are thought to be too emotioal to be given important resposibilities (DeVoe, 1999). Women are thought that they will be to weak to handle stress and pressure if given an important task so many managers chose their staff mostly from men.

Probably the most common and the most ugliest of all gender bias is sexual harrasment. Any kind of activity that makes a women uneasy about her gender can be considered as sexual harrasment. This can be done by calling a women names, calling females names generally, joking or teasing with a women targeting her sexuality or this can be done with touching a women when she does not want you to. It is very insulting and disappointing.

These discriminations against women an inequalities due to the gender differences in the workplace can only be stopped if employees from both genders understand eachother. Positions that are open to males should also be available for women. Changes should be made in society and in bussiness world. More importantly people should understand why these changes should be made. Every employee should realize the differences from eachother and accept one another in the way they are. This probably reduce the problems or at least make them simpler.

There are also the thing women have to give up, which can be called as "prices to be sucessful". In order to promote or even to get hired, they may be asked to forget about family life. Especially having babies and being a mother. This is a hard thing to decide and hard decision to stick with. This important subject puts women under pressure. When they chose to be a mother an have children they again have big losess, which are generally financial. This financial loss can be called "mother gap" (Trentham, 1998). It costs women between 17000$-255000$ to have children, since they have babies in their late 20s and look after them until thair mid 30s. These are the years which a woman or a man can earn highest. Employers do not help mother workers neither. They expect their employers to be the ones who can work long hours, can travel to confrences miles from home, can contact and meet with clients at bars or restaurants for diners or can do extracircular activities with clients.
