Advertisement relies on the use of languages and tone to persuade people to feel a certain way and hence would behave in a manner that they normally would not in the absence of the advertisement. At times we may view it positively, at other times we may just simply ignore it. Although the methods used by advertisers are infinite, they have a common goal, to persuade those who may become their potential customers. We live in a fast paced society that is ruled by mass media. Everyday we are bombarded by images of perfect bodies, beautiful hair, flawless skin, and ageless faces that flash at us like a slide show. These ideas and images are imbedded in our minds throughout our lives. Advertisements select audiences openly and subliminally, and target them with their product. Any factors that set us apart, from physical differences to genius, can cause feelings of pride or at times alienation" (Ann Raimes). In most cases thin equals beauty, so the present ideal is a thin, fit, radiantly healthy, young woman as in magazines filled with models, on billboards, and television.
