The story?s main character is a girl named Eveline who has spent her whole young adult life working and taking care of her younger siblings. Eveline has her whole life ready for a change when a young man named Frank offers to take her away from her life she very much dislikes. She is torn between keeping her promise to her mother and taking care of her family, or starting a new life in another place far away from the life that she has grown to hate. Joyce stresses the importance of morals, poverty, and making life changing decisions.
Joyce tests the importance of self-morals through Eveline and the conflicts that come into her young life. When Eveline?s mother dies, she promises to keep her family together as long as she possibly can. This turns her into the mother type over her two younger siblings.
