The Regional Jet

Aviation has a major impact on the world and its people, and it will continue to for many years to come. We have progressed a long way since the Wright Brothers' first flight; every year the Gov't implements major changes within the aviation industry. One of the most recent changes was the introduction of the Regional Jet (RJ). After reviewing exactly what a RJ is, it will be very clear that the projected growth of these relatively new aircraft will affect the National Airspace System (NAS) for the years to come. Regional Jets are making a huge impact on air travel today and managing these aircrafts is extremely important to the complex air travel system we have today.

Regional Jets are fairly new to the world of aviation; they were recently introduced in the early 90's. In 1993 Comair was the first company to present the RJ to the air transportation world, and now there are 200 or more aircraft flown by Comair in operation within the United States. (Trigeiro, 24th Annual) In comparison to turboprop aircraft, a RJ's characteristics differ greatly.

The Gov't has planned to replace the turboprops currently in use since the RJs are such a benefactor to air travel today. As a result, the growth rate and flight length of prop planes is expected to decrease over the next few years. Each type of aircraft, from large to small, will fly more specific routs that match their operational strengths. (Trigeiro, The Impact, 17) The Gov't will slowly change the number of aircraft in the air, and the routes they fly will have a big impact on the National Airspace System.

Governmental implementations on regional jets are changing air transportation in a big way. They are replacing the older turboprops and now managing jet performance at a lower cost than the traditional larger jets. We have only seen a small fraction of the RJ fleet to come; there are many orders that have not rolled off the assembly line yet. Managing these new RJs will be changing the routes that other aircraft fly, allowing other planes to fly routes best suited to them. All of these changes will have a major impact on the NAS. En route airspace at high altitudes is going to become more congested along with the terminal airspace around airports. Many changes need to be made to accommodate the new Regional Jets and the Gov't is working hard to manage these new aircraft the most affective way they can.

Why such a prediction of a large increases in RJ operations? Doug Abbey, the President of AvStat Associates, states, "What we are now witnessing is an industry in the early stages of a 180 degree change. As of today, U.S. based regionals are operating fewer than one in five of the small jet aircraft they currently have on order and option" (Small Jets) - we have only seen about one fifth of the RJs that will be on hand in the near future. All of these increases are because RJs are flying to more places that appeal to people instead of the smaller remote areas of the past. (Abbey, Small Jets) This large increase will also affect the operations of the other types of aircraft in the industry.
