The Gospel According To Mark
In the short story “The Gospel According to Mark”, by Jorge Luis Borges, there is a disconcerting idea which seems to be prevalent in several short stories. There are many examples of symbolism and some strong religious references made during this story. The story begins by describing the protagonist, a medical student named Baltasar Espinosa, whom the author has portray many of the traits and mannerisms which are associated with a savior or hero. During this description the author goes to great lengths to depict the protagonist as a gentle and kindhearted individual. The author’s description of Espinosa makes the reader believe him to be Christlike. This attitude that is given to Espinosa is displayed when the author tells us that he dislikes arguing and gambling(Literature 521).
