How to Pour Concrete

There are many steps involved to pouring a concrete patio. There are seven main steps that will help you to accomplish this task. The steps include determining the type of concrete to use, estimating the materials to use, building the forms, pouring the, concrete, finishing the concrete, and finally sweeping or grating it.

When first deciding that you want to pour a concrete patio you must first determine what type of concrete to use. This is determined depending on the size of the job and the budget allowed by the homeowner. For this project, a ten foot by twenty-foot patio, you would need to have transit-mixed concrete. Transit mixed concrete is purchased over the phone and transported in a concrete truck to the job site.

After you determine the type of concrete that you need to use, you must now try and estimate the amount of materials needed for the job. Knowing the length and width of the patio are needed. The length and width are multiplied together to determine the surface area. This is needed to order the proper amount of concrete. When ordering the concrete you must tell them the surface area of the patio to assure the proper amount is delivered. For this job you also need

The last thing to do is sweep or grate the surface. Depending on what the patio is going to be used for will determine which to do. If it were going to be an outdoor patio you would want to grate it. Grating the surface of concrete mean to leave grooves in the concrete deep enough so that one can get traction on a slick surface. On the other hand if the patio were indoors you would want to sweep it. Sweeping it leaves smaller grooves just for aesthetic purposes. Sweeping is used on a patio in an enclosed area. This is the final step in completing a concrete patio.

Once the materials are purchased you can begin to build the forms for the patio. The forms are used to pour the concrete into when it is in its liquid state. The forms act as a mold to hold it in the place desired. The forms need to develop the shape of the patio. The materials needed in this step are the two by four boards and the wooden stakes. The boards are to be inserted into the ground one inch below the surface of the ground around the perimeter of the patio. The wooden stakes are now pounded into the ground on the outside of the board to hold the form in place when the concrete is poured in. Now there is a rectangular shape of two by four boards forming the perimeter of the patio. All sides of the form must be exactly level or slightly lower on the
