Having soft, smooth skin is the goal of every woman. With all of the products that are available today who knows which is really the best? Though no one will be able to point a finger at just one product, magazine advertisers are doing their best to stand out from the competition. Advertisements use everything from rough skinned animals to relaxing showers while some ads still use the plain approach of sexy looking skin. No matter which product is used, they all claim to make your skin look and feel better. Since dry, scaly skin seems to be the major concern among woman today, what better way to represent this problem than with a scaly reptile? In an ad from the magazine Ladies Home Journal of October 2002, Lubriderm moisturizing lotion does just this. In the background of the ad a larger than life sized alligator is towering over a woman sitting carelessly in her designer chair. Her long legs hang over the side of the chair while she stares up at the alligator with a worry-free expression. White areas of the ad surround them both and a shadow is cast from the alligator. On the bottom of the ad is a small bottle of the lotion and a green colored caption to the left of the bottle that states, "Dry skin is one thing
Dry itchy skin is another problem among women that may need to go beyond the treatment of just lotion. In the same magazine of LHJ a product called Aveeno Body Wash is introduced with natural oatmeal as its healing ingredient. This ad is not quiet as effective but still gets the point across. The upper half of the page is a photo of a woman taking a soothing, relaxing shower. She stands with her back to the water as suds run down the front of her body. The water coming from the showerhead is well illuminated as to look like rays of light from the sun. A large bottle of Aveeno Body Wash is centered on the right with a slightly darker background than the rest of the ad. Within the light tan white areas of the ad are water colored oat leaves, similar to those on the bottle of wash. The caption under the picture reads "All-day relief for dry itchy skin, In your shower" to imply its ease of use. An informative description follows and indicates that dermatologists recommend it. At the bottom of the page in bold lettering is the name of the product with a small caption under it reading "Discover nature's secret for healthy skin." With an array of lotion types that are available, trying to point out which type is best is a complex task. The different styles of these ads agree on some common traits women expect from their skin such as smoothness, sexy looks, and moistness. They also used a secondary tactic that refers to a natural nutrient contained in their products to represent a bond with the healing power of nature. No m
