Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Osteogenesis Imperfecta is a bone disease that is otherwise known as brittle bone disease. It is a genetic disorder that affects some extra skeletal tissues, teeth, and heart valves. Those are the things that this disease affects but not so severely, it mostly causes people to have problems with their bones and muscles.

This disease causes a person's bones to be very breakable and their muscles to become very weak, in the area of all the breaks. All of these things happen as a result of one out of two genes that carry the instructions for type one collagen, this collagen is what carries these deformities. These genes are a major part of a person's body, they are a part of the proteins in the bone and the skin. This is why a person's bones and muscles are so affected by this disease.

There are several types and levels of this disease. Type I is the mildest form. It is inherited as a dominant trait; with this type your physical activity is limited. Type I mostly affects your legs and arms. Sometimes it appears that for a long while you will have no disability at all. Type II is lethal; it starts to effect a person while they are in the uterus or shortly after birth. This type effects the whole of a persons body. Most of the f

Having to deal with it makes a person stronger mentally, it helps them to know that they are no different than anyone else with an exception of the fact that they are maybe a little bit smaller and have brittle bones.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is the most common bone disease a person can get. It occurs in about one out of every twenty thousand live births. As far as the severity of the case goes it is much more common for a person to have type I and not the others. One out of every thirty thousand people end up with type I and one out of every sixty thousand end up with types II, III, or IV.

There is no known treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta at this time. Doctors are working hard to find something that may help the many that are effected by this disease. There are a few ways to help out their patients, which include the following; splints or casts, which are used to stabilize the bones and protect them from any further fractures. They can also use metal rods, these rods are surgically placed in a persons leg for additional support. These rods are also there to help the bone grow straight as the person gets taller. As the years go by and the person gets taller, larger rods must take the place of the smaller ones. This can cause a lot of pain and r
