Jagged Edge: Real Life Criminal Law to the Real World
Comparing Hollywood to The Real WorldI. Introduction to the movie, Jagged Edge. 3. Introduction of evidence in a trial The movie, Jagged Edge, stars Glenn Close as Teddy Barnes. Barnes is a former criminal prosecutor who takes a hiatus from her current corporate cases in order to defend a client of her firm in a high profile double-murder trial. She has not practiced criminal law in four years because of a case in which her boss, District Attorney Tom Crassney, withheld evidence that would have dissmissed the charges against the accused. Now she must face-off against Crassney, with whom she suspects is up to his old tricks. Barnes' client, Jack Forrester is the editor of "The San Francisco Times." According to the District Attorney, Forrester murdered his wife, Paige, in order to take control of the newspaper, as well a
The arraignment scene in Jagged Edge seemed to be fairly accurate. The judge informed Forrester of his rights before he entered a "not guilty" plea. At that point, the prosecution and defense councils discussed setting bail with the judge. Bail was set and the defendant was released. This was one of the few parts of the movie that I thought showed any accuracy of the real criminal justice system at all. As Barnes' private investigator Sam continues investigating the crimes, Barnes interviews Forrester about his relationship with his wife and the events that occurred that fateful night. The professional relationship soon becomes personal between the lawyer and her client. The romance builds obstacles for her in the trial and creates conflicts between her and Forrester. As new evidence surfaces, she repeatedly changes her mind as to her lover's innocence.
