Industrial Revolution in Britain
Although Britain has changed over the years, one of the major period of changes, and in my opinion the most interesting took place between 1750 and 1900. It is of course the Industrial Revolution that I talk about. The Industrial Revolution were the developments that took place In the second half of the 18th century, in all areas of society. It was when the traditional agrarian aconomy was replaced by one centured around machinery and mass production. In this essay I will be scrutenizing the seven main factors which caused this magnificant period of change in Britain. These include population, changing jobs, transport, new ideas and individuals, expansion, the slave trade and the creation of the British Empire. For each section I will be accesing the advantages and disadvantages (the arguments) based on facts, evidence, and maybe opinion. At the end of the essay I intend to include a conclusion in which I will summarise the main changes and I will be stating which cause I think had the greatest impact on the Industrial Revolution. A defernition of population is the amount of people living in a place. This can be any place from towns, citys, or even countrys. The population of Britain increased dramatically
This bar graph shows what ages people died at according to what class you were i.e rich or poor as the poor worked in much worse conditions than the rich. During the revolution these ages gradually improved as working conditions got better. The increase in population helped to lead up to the industrial revolution in the fact that more people ment more labour for the new factories. More ideas for new inventions. Although I mention mostly advantages for this section there was some disadvantages in growing populations, Britain was in disatster when there was famines i.e 1810 to feed all the people, and food prices could soar. Although some of the poor had jobs some didn't and so richer people had to pay the parish rates. The annual cost of poor relief rose from L18 to L367. Obviously more people means more poor people which is why this rose. People moved to the towns to work in the new factories, so they could earn money to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads. The consequences of this is that towns and cities became over crowded, disease was common, the farms in the country struggled to produce enough food for the cities and there was a dramatic increase in pollution. Also with all these people wanting jobs in the new factories it ment that factory owners could treat you how they wanted and if you stod up to them you would be sacked and replaced. Factories The working conditions in factories were poor. Usually workers were not taught about safety and the machines they would be working on and so had their life put into danger all of the time. Children and adults were beaten very hard for minor injuries. You often had money deducted from your wages such as 1 shilling for leaving a window open. The pay was low anyway. Peoples health was seriously effected. Workers often did not get an education. Factories were dark and gloomy conditions to work in. People worked about 50-70 hours a week. If you workd in a factory usually housing was supplied by the factory for workers to live in. People stayed in the factories because they had no where else to work. Most had no qualifications and so had to carry on to keep the money coming in. I think people changing their jobs helped to cause the Industrial Revolution in the sense that positions were filled in the new developing factories quickly and so more factories were built for different purposes because owners knew they would make money because they would always have workers wanting work. Also by people working in towns new farming machinery would need to be made and so new machinery came into use which is what the revolution is mainly about changing the old ways andin with new ways.
