Chris Rock: A Summary of

In his article, "Chris Rock: Seriously Funny", Christopher John Farley looks into the life of comedian Chris Rock. The author investigates what makes Chris Rock "the funniest man in America" (184). The investigation of Chris Rock's career leads all the way back to grade school. Although it wasn't his profession at the time, it was his way of dealing with things. He couldn't fight so he would tell jokes instead. That is how Chris Rock's huge comedy career started. Later he turned his comedy into a career that he is very successful at. His ability to make jokes about nearly every subject is truly a gift that he takes full advantage of. Chris Rock gets his fame by pushing the limits by joking about topics that others have been afraid to joke about. Rock has used his comedy to get roles in movies and even his own TV show. While Rock is unpredictable and controversial, he is always funny.

Chris Rock discovered that he had a talent for making people laugh when he was in school. When he didn't get a long with someone he would make jokes rather than fight because, as Farley explains, "Rock... is a comic, not a fighter" (184). He wasn't intending on making people laugh at the time, it just happened. He real

It is undisputable that Chris Rock is one of the most successful comedians today and as this article argues, he may very well be the funniest man in America. This isn't because he was pushed to the top by someone and it isn't because he is black. It's because he has a natural talent at making people laugh and he also has an incredible work ethic that drives him to put out the best quality comedy that he can. He desires no less than the best and he's willing to work for it. The controversy and criticism are things that come with being a successful comedian and he handles them extremely well while not really deserving them at all. He brought a fresh attitude to the comedy scene and incorporates social issues that were once thought inappropriate to joke about. He's made a very successful career out of joking about today's issues while raising the standard for comedians. While some people regret embracing his type of comedy, they "have to live with [Rock] even though he makes them uncomfortable" (187).

Many of Chris Rock's jokes are about race. This is one of the things that made him very popular and brought him fame. The white critics thought it was wonderful how he made jokes about black people even though he was one. Many people could have seen this a selling out, as Farley suggests in the article (187). He never pretended like his race was perfect and he openly made jokes about their imperfections. But when he became increasingly popular people found out that he didn't just make fun of his own race's imperfections, he made fun of everyone's. Many of the white critics that promoted his comedy didn't appreciate it when he made fun of
