A detailed Summary of Hamlet
In his first soliloquy Hamlet reveals the depth of his depression and the specific reasons for the melancholy. Hamlet feels like he is too much alive to live a normal life. It was believed that the sins of one's parents would pass on to their child and Hamlet cannot bear the burden of the sins that his mother performed. Hence he wishes that if God had not made suicide a sin then he could take his own life and be free of a world who's happiness, usefulness, truthfulness have been sucked out of it. Hamlet feels as if he is living in "hell" as he believes his world has turned into a stale, flat, unprofitable and useless world. He thinks of his world as an unweeded garden where all the goodness is sucked out by the weeds (Claudius etc) and only misery, greed, evil are left behind (a foul and gross garden).
