Advertising for the Active Women

Advertising gives the general public information about new goods and services. It hopefully increases overall sales, which in turn increase efficiency of the nation's economy. The goal of advertising is to get the word out about a product and create motivation for people to buy. Looking at two deodorant ads, one from "Seventeen" and one from "Glamour", we can see the two ads advertise the same type of product, but they have different manufacturers. Deodorant ads sell an image of freedom from odor and sweat. Every deodorant ad wants you to buy its product because it will increase your self-esteem and you do not have to worry about "bad" odors. Secret's and Soft & Dri's deodorant ads target two types of women, those who are physically active and those who are socially active.

The first deodorant ad (Soft & Dri) appeared in the popular magazine "Glamour". A muscular woman with short, black hair, is centered in the ad. The model is oriental. With a serious and focused look on her face, she is performing a high kick in kick boxing. She is wearing an all black work out outfit except for the blue trim. Blue draw strings are around her waist, around the base of her boxing gloves, and there is

a blue sweat band around her left arm. The background of the ad is black with a blue stripe going vertically on the right side. Above the woman's head the following is written: "SOFT & DRI HAS JUST BEEN POWERED UP. This is written in bold, block letters. "Powered" is written in bigger letters than the rest. "Up" is written in black since it touches the blue stripe and the rest is written in blue since it is on the black side. The product is displayed in the bottom right side of the ad. Under the product the caption reads, "Strong & Beautiful." "Just like you.".

The second deodorant ad appeared in the teen magazine "Seventeen". Three couples are sitting around a table at a diner. Two couples are kissing and the other couple is just sitting next to each other. The main character is playing with her hair. She is dazed and looking up at the ceiling. She is wearing a black sleeveless shirt and her girlfriends are wearing white shirts. Her arm is propped up on the back of the booth and her armpit is showing. The main male has put his hands in his lap. He is looking at the other two couples and wishes he was in their situation. The central characters do not feel comfortable on their date. They look bored and ill at ease with one other and their situation. In front of them are four drinks. The two couples are happy sharing drinks, but the couple in the middle is not. The walls of the diner are painted white and the seats are gray
