a. Possessed a single birthmark on her cheek

b. Men's previous reaction to her birthmark.

Conclusion: "Although the notion of moral or immoral experimenting is dated in this story, the same concerns remain ethical problems in the modern world of medicine" (Classic).

"The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne, tells the story of man's constant attempt to manipulate nature. The main characters in the story are Alymer and Georgiana. Alymer and Georgiana are in love yet there is a slight twist to the love that Alymer possesses for his wife (Theroux). Georgiana is perfect in every way except for a tiny flaw that nature has imposed on her cheek. As a scientist, Alymer is obsessed with altering nature. Alymer's obsession eventually leads to the downfall of them both.

Georgiana was very nieve. She was unaware that her birthmark was an eyesore. She felt that the mark was a blessing and was told so by many others. "Georgiana's lovers were wont to say that some fairy at her birth hour had laid her tiny hand upon the infants cheek, and left this impress there in token of the magic endowments that were to give her such sway over all hearts" (Meyer 360). She was informed that the birthmark must not be concealed, however, that the impression wrought by this fairy sign manual varied exceedingly, according to the difference of temperament in the beholders (Meyer 360). This rule was broken when Georgiana contemplated its removal. Alymer's constant bickering led Georgiana to become mad. When she was informed that the birthmark was shocking to him she felt as if she was not good enough for her husband. She did not believe that it was possible to love something that shocks you. She desperately wanted to please her husband no matter the cost. The fact that she agreed to use his formula and even allow him to perform surgery on her proves this.
