Affirmative Aaction
Affirmative Action was established to help overcome the affects of past societal discrimination by granting jobs and resources to members of specific groups, such as minorities and women. The policy was implemented by federal agencies enforcing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. While many people believe it is a step in the right direction in stopping employment discrimination, it is taking jobs from qualified persons because they are not of a certain race or gender, in turn doing the same thing that was done to minorities and women for years. Affirmative action must be stopped in order to protect the rights of all citizens. It requires discrimination against a different group, strips merit and gives preferential treatment to those who benefit from it. Affirmative action is reverse discrimination.Affirmative action requires discrimination against a different group. It simply reverses the discrimination against minorities by enforcing discrimination on whites. This policy enables two people who apply for a job in an office building for the same position to be judged differently. One applicant is white and the other is black. The two applicants have the same exact education and work experience but
Affirmative action also promotes preferential treatment. It gives blacks and other minorities preference in crucial decisions such as college admissions or job opportunities. The policy favors blacks and minorities because our society wants to become more integrated with people from different backgrounds and cultures. This favoritism and preferential treatment is unfair to those who do not benefit from it. Eastland takes a look at sports, where there is no preferential treatment. Eastland says, "No one ever thinks, 'Williams is in centerfield because of affirmative action,' or 'Lopez is catching because he is Hispanic.'" In sports, there is no preference given based upon race. The best players play; it is that simple. With Affirmative action in the real world, Williams and Lopez might not be the best 'players.' However, they have been given special treatment in obtaining their positions because of their race. This policy gives better opportunities to a specific group of people. It favors and gives preference to minorities who might not be as qualified as whites. The preferential treatment promoted by affirmative action is not only unfair but it is also in strict violation of the Declaration of Independence which states that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal..." Clearly, Affirmative action cannot be advocating that "all men are created equal" when it gives special treatment to blacks and other minorities. Affirmative action has good intention
