Comparison of Matisse's and Leger's works
Henri Matisse and Fernand Leger were two of the most influential artist of the Twentieth Century. Their styles though very different, came from similar beginnings. Both of these artists took their beginnings and lead them into a whole New World for art. Two examples of their unique styles are Matisse's The Young Sailor, 1906 and Leger's Women with a Cat, 1921.In The Young Sailor, Matisse brings forth this abstract, intellectual use of color. His characteristic style was formed with use of flat, brilliant color and fluid lines. He uses a simplistic composition, where the subject is placed in the middle of the canvas. He also uses vivid bold color patches to give the work balance and depth. Matisse achieves this sense of space through an intense, luminous orange surrounding and a deep purple and green in the subjects clothing. The intensive orange color pushes the dull purple and green forward, and the orange is sustained to the background. Also through the subjects body positioning we can establish a sense of space because the artist has you looking down upon the subject. In Leger's Women with a Cat the shapes and tones gives this painting a different sense of depth and space. In Leger's painting you achieve a sense of depth b
Matisse's figure also portrays a sense of over exaggerated mass due to the figure's large torso, muscular legs, and small head. Also Matisse does not go into detail with the subjects' face. In contrast to Cezanne in many of his late portraits, he is not content with a study of planes and structures, leaving us with a masklike impression. Also we see that Leger does not deal with portraying the subjects face as well. He just creates the tubular shapes of the body and composes them into a rhythmic atmosphere. Leger draws his female figure with oversized shapes with monochromatic tones, which makes her feel completely unfeminine and monstrous. But Matisse's figure is handled with boldly brushed coloristic effect, which gives the figure more life and movement. These artists were different but the same in many ways. They both were influenced greatly by Cezanne. Leger shifted his studies from architecture to painting due to the influence on Cezanne. Leger would create works of art out of the influence of Cezanne's cylinders and cones. And Matisse was greatly influenced and inspired by Cezanne as well. His work was based upon his compositions and learning's. ecause the figure's body is p
