Reading as an Enjoyment
Some people consider reading to be something that they would rather not do, but reading is part of everyday life and has many benefits. Some people read to gain information while others read books for relaxation and enjoyment. Reading the daily newspaper allows people to find out what is happening around the world, in their own country and in their local area. People have read for generations and will continue to read for many more to come. The four books that I have read throughout the year are the following; Boy by Roald Dahl which informs the reader about Dahl's own childhood stories; Survival written by Simon Bouda about the inspirational story of Stuart Diver the sole survivor of the Thredbo disaster; Hero Of Lesser Causes, about a sister trying to save her brothers life and Checkers written by the prominent children's author John Marsden. Boy is about Roald Dahl's childhood. Dahl was one of six children. He describes the ups and downs of his childhood life, including coming to terms with the deaths of both his father and sister. The loss and grief he experienced from these deaths was a huge shock to him. This book also explains how different life was for a boy growing up in the early
This book was a very interesting because it described a real life situation that I had remembered seeing on the news at the time of the Thredbo disaster. The news and television reports gave me the facts of the disaster and the rescue however, the book has given me an understanding of Diver's own experience of being trapped and rescued. Diver's feelings, his motivation for wanting to stay alive and his courage gives a personal understanding of his situation and his loss. I found the courage that Diver displayed as inspirational because it gives me hope that no matter how bad situations are if you have courage you have something to build a new life on. The book Survival provided the inspirational story of the Thredbo disaster's sole survivor Stuart Diver. Stuart's life was absolutely perfect and he admits in the story that he could not have asked for more in life. Skiing was his passion and as a ski instructor he had a job that he really loved. He also had been married to his beautiful wife Sally for two years. On the night of the 30th July 1997 Stuarts's life fell apart when one of Thredbo's ski lodges that he and Sally were staying in collapsed. A landslide created by rain and heavy snowfalls buried nineteen people and Stuart was the only survivor. Diver relives his horrendous experience of being trapped under meters of rubble and concrete slabs for sixty-five hours knowing that his wife Sally lay dead beside him. Diver's story really inspired me, as it was only his physical and mental strength against impossible odds that kept him alive. "You could say we were joined at the hips" Chessboard? What sort of a name is that? twentieth century. Reading this book I learnt that Dahl went to boarding school and was not given adequate food or cared for properly. He was even hit with the cane at school by the headmaster as a punishment. This type of punishment at any school would now be called assault. The discipline and treatment that Dahl experienced at boarding school shows how different Dahl's school life was compared to the school life of a boy today. Boy was an enjoy
