Situation Ethics

1a) Situation Ethics was developed by an Anglican theologian, Joseph Fletcher as a result of his assessment of Legalism and Antinomianism. Legalism is the idea that there are fixed moral laws which are to be obeyed at all times. Antinomianism is the idea that there are no fixed moral principles but that a person acts morally spontaneously. In recommending a situationist ethic the most important thing is the application of an ethical principal that makes it good or evil. The principal 'to do whatever is the most loving thing' is not a law but an attitude that can inform moral choice. One example is that it is considered wrong to steal but if by stealing a gun you are preventing a person from killing people, then you have acted in love and thus your theft is non-accountable.

1b) The Bible teaches the value of both symbols in the Bible and the truth behind the symbols. For example, the Bible speaks about the symbols of the bread and cup in the communion service. The Bible commands the Ch


urch to observe communion with it's symbolism. The Bible points out that our hearts need to be changes and that what is in the heart eventually comes out. God corrects his children as an earthly father would correct his children. The Bible is God's sturdy guide and it teaches that if we listen and obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit and apply the Bible to our lives we will be able to pass the trials of this life. If we are rebellious or ignorant of the teachings of the Bible, then we may suffer many things God never intended us to suffer. God teaches us through the Bible to avoid the temptations that cause downfall.
