Reality Television
CRASH!! There has just been an accident. Suddenly there are sounds of sirens from ambulances and police cars rushing to the scene. Many bystanders' curiosity's skyrocket, because they want to know what has happened. People up ahead on the road are slowing down and getting out of their cars in hopes of glimpsing a mangled car or seeing human wreckage. This makes many spectators feel superior to the people involved in the accident or victimized by it. People in society want to know anything and everything about the people around them, whether it is public or private information. They are so involved with other's lives that private moments are being publicized, especially on television. American culture's obsession with reality-based television reveals how voyeurism, exploitation, and fantasy are sought through other people's experiences. Reality shows are broadcasted all over the television. Two of the most well known reality shows were produced on MTV, and those were Road Rules and Real World. These shows basically have the same plot, but Real World remains in the same house while Road Rules travels the World. They have three guys and three girls living together to see how they get along and work toget
Grady, Eileen. "A Regular Kind of Reality." March 15, 2001. http://www.themestream.com/articles/385695.html. 21 March 2001. On Temptation Island everyone in America got an opportunity to look in on four couple's lives and to learn everything about their relationships. Home viewers watched them be tempted by gorgeous single men and women and saw them cheating on their supposed love-ones. People are "chop-licking connoisseurs of other people's secrets," and by peeping in on the reactions couples had to these situations, viewers drooled over what was to happen next (Gamson 458). The public didn't care if these real people were in pain; they were displayed for their entertainment. When the show finally came down to its last episode, viewers wanted to see the most drama they possibly could. They wanted to see these couples lives ruined, for the mere purpose of our pleasure and well being.
