The Destructors Motivations By Karlene Gup

There are numerous different reasons for the actions of gangs today. Whether they are there for destruction, cruelty and violence or to find a place to belong. But what comes along with gangs is delinquency. Each gang has motivations to what they do. The gang in The Destructors has different motivations. They were in the destruction for the adventure. War had become a part of their lives and destruction was the result of it. The gang were in a low class situation, but still had morals and kindness with in themselves. They were not the type of gang out for cruelty and violence towards others; they were in it for their passion of destruction.

The gang saw themselves as rough people, and that others could not care for them. But when something shows them that there is still beauty in the world they feel the need to ruin it, to make it ugly. "It was the word "beautiful" that worried him-." (Page 68) They see the beautiful house, a

The gang, being delinquent, still has the considerations for others. They have morals and are not the type of cruel gang. They have seen the consequences of war, and have that on their shoulders. They had no aim to hurt Old Misery. In fact they go the distance to make him comfortable. "Here's a blanket,...We want you to be comfortable to-night...We don't want you to starve, Mr. Thomas." (Page 77) They give him shelter, food and warmth. This point of the story is a symbol of understanding. They understand the circumstance that Old Misery is in, and give him comfort.

The story ends with the Lorry driver laughing at Old Misery's loss. "His eye lit on the remains of a bath and what had once been a dresser and he began to laugh." (Page 78) The purpose the destruction was to cause a stir. They have succeeded with their actions. The laughter is caused because it was not theirs. The gang is motivated to destroy something that is not their responsibility.
