Family or Freedom?
Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" is an unusual story for its time period. Abortion was still new and very dangerous, but it was rapidly growing in popularity. It was the thing to do if you were young and were not ready to settle down for family life. This story deals with one couple's choice between family and freedom. The couple in the story is young and traveling the wrold. They are having fun and then the girl gets pregnant. Suddenly things have changed. Should they start a family? Are they ready to start a family? Should they get married if they are not already? Or should they abort it and go on with life the way it was? The man is trying to convince the girl that an abortion is the right thing to do. He keeps saying to her that the operation is simple and that everything will be like it was before. This is kind of an inrealistic thought. People and the world change and nothing can go back to the way it was. The girl knows that Things can never be the same so she is reluctant to go through with the abortion. At the same time she does not want to upset the man so she keeps her thoughts to h
