Unjust World
The world that was depicted through the eight stories, and two song lyrics that were read in class, was a very unjust world. For starters, there are countless examples of discrimination against those of lower social standings. The poor, or less fortunate, people are, in most cases, treated more like animals than human beings. Also, the people in these stories show a lack of priorities, and morals. They make poor decisions, and, for the most part, do not even realize the decisions were immoral. In addition, the people who are not making these bad choices are suffering, or experiencing hardships, most of which are not deserved. Taken as a whole, the world revealed through these selections is one of discrimination, poor judgment, and many hardships. First of all, there were many occurrences of bigotry against those less fortunate. On the other hand, there were a few occasions when those of lower standings were treated fairly, as was the case in the story "The Guest". Daru treated the Arab more than fair; he treated him as an equal. But for the most part, prejudice was a prominent feature of the characters in the stories. One example would be in the story "The Heavenly Christmas Tree". The little boy in this s
Secondly, morals and priorities seem to be completely disregarded in the world shown through these selections. Morals, for example, are completely overlooked by Ryo in the selection "Downtown". She had a husband being held as a prisoner of war, and there was no evidence of his death, yet she slept with another man. She completely went against everything ethical and cheated on her husband; the person she had claimed to be faithful to until death do they part. "The Guest" also showed an Arab going against morals by killing his cousin. Killing is never justified, unless in self-defense. This case was not self-defense. It was a fight over grain, and the Arab killed his cousin with a billhook. "In short, he killed his cousin with a billhook. You know, like a sheep, kreezk!"(Page 306) The father in "Forty-Five a Month" also had his priorities out of order. He did not go with what he thought to be right by leaving work and taking his daughter out. Instead he took a raise and stayed at work, after promising his daughter he would take her out. He said himself that his work never left him any time for his family and he was going to take his daughter out no matter what, because she meant more to him than his lousy job. But that was not the case when it came time for him to pick her up. Instead of putting his daughter first, and doing what he knew was right, he sold out and stayed at work. "Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave, no one was saved." This line, taken from the Beatles song "All the Lonely People", gives an image of the Priest casually walking from a grave of a person who belonged to the church. He is not depicted as being sad, but more disappointed because he did not save anyone. It seems to me as if he also does not have his priorities exactly right. It is a good thing that he wants to save people, but that is not his only job. He just lost a member of the church, and he cares more about saving people than giving this woman a meaningful burial. The issue of ethics was definitely approached in these stories, and I found them to be very dishonorable. In conclusion, the world depicted through these selections was a world of injustice, and immorality. People of lower social standings were discriminated against heavily, and treated very unreasonable. Also, the morals and priorities in this literary world were completely ignored; people made poor decisions, and hurt others, and themselves in the process. Not to mention countless innocent people went through numerous rough times, and lived extremely unfair lives. So many people in these stories experienced undeserved lives. Overall, these selecti
