As Mohandas K. Gandhi once said, "Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment." Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948), called Mahatma ("Great Soul"), was a small man who had a big heart. He was India's leader in its successful struggle to liberate itself from British colonialism. His love for humanity and his will to uplift all people against the oppression of apartheid showed in his many public and personal demonstrations. He was a man who was easily likeable and highly respected, unless of course, it was your cause that he was fighting against. He spoke of truth, peace and unity among many other things. What made Gandhi's movement extraordinary is that it functioned without political influence, economic resources, or military power of any kind. After reading the book, The Story of My Experiments with Truth by Mohandas K. Gandhi, when I was 17 years old, my thoughts and views were changed forever. Gandhi's beliefs and actions have taught me to fight for what I believe in, to put others ahead of me, and to strive against the injustices which face us everyday in this world. His nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India prove that peace and truth can, and will, work in breaking down the barriers that surround all of us. Gandhi says that his life was a series of experiments, nothing more. He actively sought lifestyles and philosophies different than his own, tried them with merit, and adopted or rejected them based on his experience with them. With that said, I have learned to not just pass something up because I didn't understand it, or to dismiss something merely by it being foreign to me. Throughout his life, Gandhi's view matured and changed everyday. This I am sure irked the British but it is the essence of Gandhi's life, that he absorbed the goodness out of every incident in his life. This shows that we never know enough about life, that we never know the entire truth. We should all be in search of what we believe happiness is. If Gandhi has taught me one thing, it is that "where there is love, there is life; hatred leads to destruction." He also fought for the liberation of India's lower caste.
