Journal Response Catcher and the Rye
1. I read the book The Catcher in the Rye. The catcher in the rye was a book that was written by J.D. Salinger in the 1940's. The book is 26 chapters and 214 pages long. 2. I had no real reason for choosing the catcher in the rye. It was referred to me by a friend that had previously read the book. 3. The book begins around 1950, at a Pencey Prep football game. Pencey Prep was a private school for boys in Agerstown Pennsylvania. After the game Holden Caulfield prepares to leave Pennsylvania to go to Manhattan New York. 4. a. The main character of the catcher in the rye is Holden Caulfield, a 17 year old boy that has just dropped out of his 3rd school. Holden is a little scrawny but really tall. b. I think that Holden Caulfield is the main character because he is the person that tells the story. The story is all about what happened to Holden after his stay at Pencey Prep along with the events that led up to that point. He tells about many people during the book but the plot of the story revolves around Holden going crazy and his search to get help. c. *Love - Holden tells about a girl named Jane Gallagher. Holden loved Jane partly because she was innocent like a child. Later in the bo
7. The author would need to find out how typical sixteen year olds act in order to create this person who unlike any of them. He might have had to stay at a high school for a few weeks. He also may have to find out about New York's environment. He would need to investigate how people act and what could have happened to Holden, like the prostitute for instance. 5. The first conflict is with Holden and his former teacher Mr. Spencer. Holden goes to Spencer only to tell him that he was leaving Pencey. Somehow this turned into Spencer trying to give Holden advice about trying harder and applying himself. Holden began to get very annoyed with Spencer and made a comment about almost everything Spencer did (which also shows Holden's honesty. Eventually Holden gets so frustrated with Mr. Spencer he makes up a lie to end the conversation. 6. I think the most interesting part of the book is how Holden sees things differently than everyone else. He is not phony like the other people. He sees things as they are not how people pretend they are and he wants to fix it. Which I find interesting because not many people think that way
