Plays throughout the existence of their writers have ultimately had a main title character. This character is a very pivotal point of the story and can be very easily located just by their actions. This person in the play is also known as the protagonist. The protagonist usually displays a variety of traits that can be easily identified with which is why this person is indeed the main and title character. In the play "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams, Tom Wingfield is indeed the protagonist and Laura and Amanda Wingfield are not.

The third reason that Jim is the protagonist is the fact that he is extremely patient in a family full of constant agitation. Amanda is always on Tom's case about his career and how selfish he is for even thinking about leaving the factory and pursuing another career in the field of his choice. Tom knows he isn't suited to work in the warehouse and even Jim, his coworker and sister's gentleman caller tells him that " You and me, we're not the warehouse type." Also Amanda is constantly just ragging on him period and when the electricity goes out because Tom neglected and just plain forgot to pay the bill, Amanda tells Tom that " there's such a high price for negligence in this world." Tom does not respond and is helped out by his buddy Jim.
