Partial-Birth Abortion
Partial-Birth Abortions, are they wrong?Every once in a while, a topic of discussion will come up that makes some people cringe. Just at the mere thought of a debate, or that someone could be against a belief of his or her own, is mind-boggling! And so it begins, the heated debate. Debates can come in all lengths and sizes. However, none of them will usually be as strong or potentially violent as an ethical practice. Ethics can affect a person in ways he or she had no clue. The person may become upset and cry, feel sick, or even get violent. Although I myself remain calm over most debates, abortion is one that I feel rather strongly about. But it is not just abortion that I feel so stern over. In fact, I feel that it is a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body when it comes to abortion. Although, one situation that I do not accept the same is partial-birth abortion. This paper is being written as an informative approach to an unfortunately fast growing reality. By the end of this paper, the reader should have a clear understanding of what a partial-birth abortion is, how it is used, who performs it, what methods are used, the "pro's and con's" of partial-birth abortion, where I stand as the author, an
Women and medical professionals around the world state many reasons both for and against such an act. One of the reasons that many women feel to be the largest reason for a partial-birth abortion is that it is healthier for the woman in question. By the procedure being performed after the fetus has passed into the vagina, the risk of the situation turning sour has decreased drastically and the woman has virtually no chance of possible health issues allowing her to no longer get pregnant. Many times when a woman has a normal abortion in the first three to four weeks of pregnancy, a small tear is made in the lining of the uterus where the egg was scraped off of the lining. This tear has caused some women to no longer be capable of carrying a child because in future times of pregnancy or potential pregnancy, the egg can find no place to attach itself on the lining of the womb (Anonymous Physician). I personally feel that partial-birth abortions are wrong. A general abortion I believe is up to the mother because it is her right to abort the pregnancy if she feels that she cannot handle the situation. But once into the second trimester or later, the baby has feeling, is fully developed, and almost has the capability of sustaining life without the mother. If the mother must not have the child for health reasons, there is a large question as to what the risks are and that is the one circumstance I could possibly understand there even being question to. But in terms of just deciding against the pregnancy for whatever other reason, the mother should give birth to the child and give it up for adoption. Have the papers for adoption signed before the child is ever delivered and she will never even lay eyes on the child. At least then the mother can feel that she has done the right thing, knowing that the baby is in a good home with a loving family that has the capacity to provide for the child. There is only one real way that partial-birth abortion can be stopped. The one way is by passing law to ban this abortion. Some people say that if a mother is not allowed this option, she will find a way of aborting the child herself, but if that's the case, many mothers are against partial-birth abortions and they are doing that now. There will never be anything that can be done to prevent a mother from injuring herself. The only thing that can be done is making it illegal to have a partial-birth abortion. One reason against partial-birth abortion is that many consider it to be murder. The unborn child is fully developed and although not born, is almost fully capable of sustaining life. Many feel that if a woman is going to carry a child for the length of time already spent, then the child should be put up for adoption rather than being aborted. There is a waiting period of almost
