The Great Mistakes of Sin found in Miller
The Bible says, "The consequences of sin is death." Nathaniel Hawthrorne portrays a chain of sequenced events that happen because of sin his characters commit. In the 1600's, Boston, Massachusetts is filled with the religious group the Puritans who were "the most intolerant brood that ever lived"(64). The Puritans believed in every word of the Bible, and they were intolerant to deal with open sin. The young, beautiful Hester Prynne makes the mistake of adultery that would change her life. Arthur Dimmesdale, a well-honored minister of Boston, let his sin with Hester slowly degrade his life until the point of his death. An elderly man, named Roger Chillingsworth, feeds on Hester's sin that would eventually lead to Arthur's downfall. The inevitable effects of sin forever change Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingsworth. Arthur Dimmesdale hides his sin that he made with Hester from the public, which deteriorates his inner self. Because his sin was not publicized, he suffers no discrimination from the people; he only degrades himself mentally, physically, and spiritually. Arthur, who tries to avoid the effects of sin that would come if revealed to Boston, leads a normal life after his sin with Hester. Arthur remains a well-honored man in Boston despite the internal conflict that he is fighting. The people of Boston respected him as, "the mouth- piece of Heaven's messages of wisdom, and rebuke, and love."(98) The supposedly doctor Roger Chillingsworth ironically weakens Arthur's life. Chillingsworth's medicine helps the minister, but the internal conflicts that Roger brings to Arthur actually make him worse. Arthur's reconciliation with Hester gives him hope and confusion about his future.
