Chasing Amy
Chasing Kevin Smith Ok so the start of Chasing Amy can be confusing. If you don't read comic books there is not much intrest for the first 15 minutes of the movie. But wait, it does get good. Real good. Chasing Amy is the story of a guy who makes comic books (Ben Affleck), his lifetime friend (Jason Lee) and the girl who comes between them (Joey Lauren Adams). Now we have seen this story before, you know the one. Where the two guys have a great friendship but the love of one good women tears them apart ? Well this isn't it. Sit back and let me tell you a tale. Holden writes comic books with Banky. They live in a loft, argue back and forth and drive each other nuts. And somehow they are not gay. At a fateful comic book convention one day Holden meets Alyssa Jones and sparks fly. The next night Holden and Banky go to a bar at the invite of Alyssa, and they discover one small detail. Alyssa's girlfriendSee Alyssa plays for the other team. (Well, I guess it could be your team but a different league than most...anyways, you get it, she's
a lesbian) And the strangest love triangle of all time begins. This isn't your normal gay/straight love story. If you know who Kevin Smith is, you know he doesn;t make normal movies. Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma.... these are not normal type of movies, and Chasnig Amy is no different. This movie is smart, funny, intelligent and just plain good. It takes the notion of lesbian/straight/gay sterotypes and turns them on their head. The gay character is an African american, nelly comic creator who plays a black, militaristic straight man to the masses. He is like no other gay character seen before and everything you know about gay characters is thrown out the door with him. Alyssa isn't just a normal lesbian, lipstick or otherwise. And Holden, well Holden is just like every straight guy I know. This is a great love story. There is a an incredible scene in the rain where Holden professes his love, and Alyssa professes her feelings. It is heart stopping in its intensity. But don't get me wrong, this movie is funny, very funny. It's sharp wit and
