Marcus Crassus
In the Roman era there were many great noble men but one in particular stands out named Marcus Licinius Crassus. He rose to power quickly and became the wealthiest man in Rome. He became colleagues with Caesar and Pompey and helped them achieve the high status that they had. He did not have a good childhood and came from a poor family. This mad the wealth and prestige that he gained that much more respectable. Crassus was born about 115 B.C., in Rome. He had an older and a younger brother who were both married and lived with them and his parents in a small house in Rome. He was educated out of his house by his parents. His father married a woman whom was from a well to do family. His father was born into the office of a censor and was given great honor. In battle his father perished along with his older brother. From this happening Crassus inherited his fathers' money and ended up marrying his brothers' widow named Licinia. He ended up staying with her till death and together they had many children. Some of the ways that he went about getting his money were sneaky yet smart. He took notice to how close and tall the houses in Rome were and that they would be easily susceptible to fire. In Italy, Crassus would meet Pompey and become very jealous of him and his power. Pompey came from a bad background, yet he showed great courage and Sulla respected that. He did not like the fact that Pompey was so successful in all his actions. They called him Pompey the great and this angered Crassus even more. He envied the relationship that Pompey and Caesar had together. Caesar knew that Crassus felt negatively about him and was reluctant to ask for money from him. When they finally became friendly towards each other Crassus helped Caesar financially. Caesar was trying to become Praetor of Spain and his creditors were in need of money. Crassus became a very wealthy man, but through all this he did not become a spendthrift. He did not like to be extravagant and was said to look down upon those who were. Yet he was open to lending money to friends. If they were in need of money he would lend it to them, but at a high rate of interest. He was also very kind to strangers and always kept an open invitation at his house. After getting this great honor from the Senate, Pompey received an offer to the consulship. Crassus was angered, yet willing to allow Pompey to have it. Pompey felt that he should allow Crassus to have some of the power and invited him to be his colleague. Pompey's friendliness did not last for long. They argued and had hostility towards each other. Very little was accomplished in the consulship during their command. Crassus's reign as a noble Roman was long lived. He accomplished many things and became the wealthiest man in Rome. The ways in which he attained his wealth may not have been credible but it was smart. He formed the first fire brigade and led the way for firefighters today. Crassus also helped Caesar gain power and become the person he was. All together many things today would have been different if Crassus was not alive. His life had a bitter beginning and end but he influenced many people over the course of his life. The rebellion of Spartacus broke out and at first Lentulus Batiates was in charge. He gathered many people and trained them for battle. He fought Spartacus for a short time and during this period ending up loosing many men. The senate was displeased with Lentulus's actions and chose Crassus to take command. He had proven his ability while fighting for Sulla. He had many friends, and great wealth which came into use when the treasury was low. On hearing that Crassus how had command many friends flocked to help him out. They knew that by doing this they would achieve some sort of honor. His personality was mainly of kindness and generosity.
