Several times a week I witness my fellow students make a choice that may end their lives. Without giving it a second thought these individuals put their lives and those who surround them in danger. When they do this I am sure they never think that they could be committing murder. What they are doing is drinking and driving. When someone gets behind the wheel of a car after drinking they are putting themselves in the position to commit homicide. Something needs to be done to change the thinking of college students to make them realize the mistake they are making.
For many college students drinking is a form of stress relief and relaxation. Drinking gives you a feeling that nothing else can. Alcohol allows students to forget about the pressures from parents, professors, and bosses. During the time that you are drunk everything that is wrong seems right. Drinking is also a bonding experience between friends, particularly male students. Many organizations encourage college students to drink. Fraternities and Sororities are notoriously known for there ritualistic drinking habits. For the majority of college students drinking is a part of life. I understand that drinking is a part of the college lifestyle and I am accepting to that. I do not want to prevent anyone from having a good time I just ask that students do it responsibly. Before beginning to drink consider how you will get home. Take in to consideration the fact that drinking and driving is a serious crime. Look at the person next to you and ask yourself if you are willing to be their killer. If you are alone look in the mirror are you willing to commit suicide or go to jail. So before you get behind that wheel think of all the damage you can do.
Although Brian's life was altered he lived to tell others of his mistake my friend Stephanie was not so lucky. Only three weeks after our high school graduation Stephanie died. An honor student all through high school Stephanie planned to head off to Florida State University in August. After a night at a house party Stephanie and a friend left for the drive home, both had been drinking. Stephanie's impaired judgment led her to make the decision not only to drive while intoxicated but to leave off her seatbelt. After swerving to avoid the car in front of her Stephanie's car flew off the road. The car crashed into a nearby tree and Stephanie was killed on impact. The friend she was with walked away with few physical injuries. Her friend and those friends at the party will live the rest of their lives knowing that they could have done something to save her. Her family will always morn her death. Drinking and driving not only affected Stephanie but everyone she knew.
