A detailed Summary of Lacrosse

The sport of lacrosse is a very unique activity. This interesting way to pass the time originated from the Native Americans. They had many different versions of lacrosse. Two of the main Indian tribes that participated in this sport were the Cherokee and the Iroquois. Some other tribes would use two sticks at once but it is mainly played with one. At times men and women would compete with and against each other, but for the most part women had their own version that they would play separately. The Cherokees used this game as a use of military training. They knew this as "The little brother of war." The Cherokees had a very odd way of playing this game. Each team consisted of hundreds and sometimes thousands of players. At times the whole tribe would indulge this is activity. The goals were miles apart. These games would last hours and even days. Due to the fact that there were so many people playing the game there was a small chance of you getting a touch of the ball. This would result in players focusing on using their stick as a way to injure their opponent. The Iroquois had a different name of the game than that of the Cherokees. They called this game "baggataway." The Iroquois had a very organized and well-man

Early Europeans began playing this game in Canada during the early 19th century. The Montreal Olympic Club gathered a team together in 1844 to play against a Native American team. Many games like this went on for about seven years later. The first modern organized sport of lacrosse came in 1856. During this time the Montreal Lacrosse Club (MLC) was formed. This club was the first to develop written rules for the game. A member of the MLC by the name of George Beers rewrote the rules more comprehensively in 1867.
