The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter is structured around three main scaffold scenes and the characters involved in them. As we look at these three scaffold scenes we will se how the main characters of the story change in image and in personality. These three scaffold scenes all take place in the middle of town in the market place. The book starts off with the fist scaffold scene, where Hester Prynne leaves the prison to stand on the scaffold in the market place. In the first scene we meat our four main characters Hester Prynne, Pearl, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Hester looks back to her past for comfort but then brings herself back to the reality of her shame. Narrator “Yes!-these were her realities,-all else had vanished!”(61).
