The Scarlet Letter
A detailed Summary of The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter is structured around three main scaffold scenes and the characters involved in them. As we look at these three scaffold scenes we will se how the main characters of the story change in image and in personality. These three scaffold scenes all take place in the middle of town in the market place. Narrator "...many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They said that it meant Able..."(168). Hester lived with her sin and excepts it without any complaints. As we look at Dimmesdale he has become ill and looks tired and defeated from having to withhold his sin. In the second scaffold scene he stands on the scaffold in the protection of night to free himself from some of his guilt. Chillingworth has aged very quickly and his face appears evil in his pursuit to find the man . Narrator "...Chillingworth's aspect had undergone a remarkable change...there was something ugly and evil in his face..."(131). Now that Pearl is old enough to interact we se that she is wise beyond her age, and
