Utopia

Man is a very complex creature. He is ironically both good and bad at the same time. More often than not, good overcomes evil, but as Edmund Burke once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Mankind has many qualities that portray the good nature of man. Among these qualities is compassion. For example, if one man sees another hurting, he feels the need to help him. Another good quality of man is love. “Love is the salt of life,” according to John Sheffield, Ode on Love, Canto V. Most of mankind’s motivation to achieve goodness is love.

Although man has many good qualities, he also has a darker, bad side. Man has a tendency to want what he doesn’t have. Greed brings out the bad in mankind. When man wants something bad enough, he will do anything to get it not caring who or what it hurts. Man’s fear of the unknown also drives him towards evil most of the time. When man does not know something, he will automatically hate it. It is this hate that causes so many of the problems in society today.
