This simplified example of a research paper will look at two of the bottom-up process theories that we use for perception. The two processes that will be evaluated in this paper are Template Theories and a Feature Theory known as Selfridge's Pandemonium Model. This paper will include hypothetical experiments that could be used to test both theories. It also includes evidence that is for and against both of these theories.
When we are presented with a familiar two-dimensional pattern, we are often able to recognize it. This is often more of an achievement than it might seem. For example, we can read hand-written words written in different ways and we can read text printed in several fonts or in different orientations. In other words, our visual system operates in a flexible fashion to make sense of the two-dimensional patterns we encounter every day. The central issue that has been addressed by theorists is how to account for this flexibility. The two theories that will be discussed and researched in this paper are Template Theories and Selfridge's Pandemonium Model. First we will research Template Theories.
One of the simplest approaches to pattern recognition
A way to test both of these theories is by showing a stimulus to each participant in a study designed to challenge the question of whether or not the memory is designed with many templates stored in our long-term memory. Or whether the memory is based on nuerons or 'demons' that respond at different volumes in the memory to allow us to recognize different figures.
